What are the decisions that strengthen your life? Every decision you make impacts your life. I can’t speak for any of you, but I know I want my life to be as healthy, positive, fun, successful, and loving as I can make it! So what decisions help us get there?
I’m a very emotional guy. I let things bother me that shouldn’t, and sometimes it’s hard to let go. There was a day last week where I was pretty much paralyzed all day long. I didn’t have to work, and had no other plans. I was in a major depression funk, for no huge logical reason. I tried playing songs, doing some songwriting to get my feelings out, playing with my bunnies, but NOTHING was grooving, and nothing was getting me out of my funk or helping the situation or allowing me to see things in a different/better perspective. I lacked energy, motivation, and strength to be able to make a change. This went on for about 8/10ths of my waking day. It was a really rough day. Towards the end of my day, a small ray of hope shinned through, and although I was not back to 100%, I was able to get some things done and make a more stimulating connection to those activities. Once that moment came through, I jumped on it and told myself I want to act on this, and build from it. I want to re-take my energy, strengthen my motivation, to ultimately lead to a successful and happy day.
If I felt I could have just made the “decision” to be happy and productive earlier in the day, I would have. Some things are beyond our control. Depression is not something we can just open up the shades, let the light in, and it goes away. But when you aren’t battling with depression, you have a much better sense of control over your thoughts and capabilities, and you can make strong, healthy, happy decisions. For me, it was pretty easy. I felt crummy all day long, then when I finally saw some control, I seized it and wanted to get as much out of it as I could. Most of us are in the control seat all of the time, but because most people didn’t just experience 12 hours of extreme depression, their decisions are not as hasty to make the most of their time.
It’s no secret that to be successful and happy and achieve your goals you need to be driven, motivated, and really care about what it is you want. These are the decisions we need to lead our lives with. The decision to get something done vs. putting it off. The decision to make a list of things you want to accomplish, and then make a step by step outline as to how it’s going to get done. The decision to turn off your phone during a family meal. It isn’t just work-career related…it’s anything you want it to be. The point is, we are constantly making decisions, but we don’t realize the value and outcome of even the smallest decisions. I’m not saying to eat a piece of food with a spoon or a fork should be intense or dwelled upon, but I am saying we need to make more conscious, deliberate decisions when it comes to the quality of our lives. Don’t just drift through each day. “Live like you were dying” is probably too much of an extreme to try and adopt as a personal mantra for everyday. But, we can slowly work ourselves closer to that perspective by making more decisions to better ourselves.
